OVERDUE had the pleaÂsure of interÂviewÂing VanesÂsa VanÂderÂpuye, a young British actress curÂrentÂly starÂring in the new series BulÂletÂproof, SeaÂson 2 with AshÂley WalÂters and Noel Clarke, of Top Boy and KidultÂhood fame. VanesÂsa plays Ashley’s wife Arjana in the series and is also known for starÂring in the award-winÂning Web series DreamÂing Whilst Black, for which she received two nomÂiÂnaÂtions for Best Actress at the DigÂiÂtal Screen Nation Awards.

ConÂgratÂuÂlaÂtions on the new series! Any memÂoÂrable highÂlights from the behind the scenes? What did you enjoy the most while filmÂing seaÂson two of Bulletproof?
Thank you so much! It was a honÂestÂly a blessÂing to be apart of this proÂducÂtion. The chemÂistry between everyÂone was light and fun even after 6 months of filmÂing.
The most memÂoÂrable highÂlight has to be my sex scene with AshÂley WalÂters. It was my secÂond day of filmÂing so what a way to realÂly break the ice! We had an intiÂmaÂcy adviÂsor, Ita, on set with us all day. She remindÂed me that it was my body and I had to powÂer to say yes or no. You should nevÂer feel obligÂatÂed to do anyÂthing if you feel uncomÂfortÂable. The whole team were extremeÂly respectÂful and made me comÂfortÂable. We had to pracÂtice how to hone in to our inner mamÂmal self to cliÂmax, as our charÂacÂter of course! Cringy but hilarÂiÂous at the same time.
How did you like workÂing with Noel and Ashley?
BanÂter all day! NevÂer a dull moment when they are around. I’m actuÂalÂly quite a shy perÂson but they made me feel so welÂcome. They inspire and motiÂvate me everyday

ActÂing is someÂwhat simÂiÂlar to modÂelÂling, in a way that you have to get in the charÂacÂter, but also very difÂferÂent, what advanÂtages does one bring to the othÂer in your opinÂion? What do you see yourÂself as first, an actress or a model?
I have always seen myself as an actress first. That was the vocaÂtion I had always dreamed of. To be honÂest, growÂing up, I nevÂer saw anyÂone of my aesÂthetÂic, skin tone or hair so nevÂer thought I could be a model. In some ways yes, I can take aspects I’ve learnt from actÂing into modÂelÂling and visa verÂsa. HowÂevÂer, with modÂelÂling, it’s all about your natÂurÂal charisma/ perÂsonÂalÂiÂty. With actÂing, you have to research, have or creÂate a backÂstoÂry to dig deepÂer and find the truth in each charÂacÂter to conÂvey a truthÂful perÂforÂmance overÂall. For me, that’s defÂiÂniteÂly more rewardÂing.
As we’re in the endometrioÂsis month at the moment and you’ve been vocal in your fight for raisÂing awareÂness of this invisÂiÂble conÂdiÂtion that affects so many women, do you see this changÂing in any time in the future. How do you cope with it?
EndometrioÂsis is a long-term conÂdiÂtion where tisÂsue simÂiÂlar to the linÂing of the womb grows in othÂer places, such as the ovaries and falÂlopÂiÂan tubes. Around 1.5 milÂlion women (1 in 10) in the UK are curÂrentÂly livÂing with the conÂdiÂtion. It’s one of the most painful health conÂdiÂtions accordÂing to the NHS. SympÂtoms include chronÂic pain in your lowÂer tumÂmy or back (pelvic pain), nauÂsea, vomÂitÂing, irregÂuÂlar & heavy periÂods, bloatÂed stomÂach, lack of enerÂgy, depression/isolation and pain durÂing or after sex. It may also lead to inferÂtilÂiÂty and bowÂel and bladÂder problems. After being diagÂnosed after sufÂferÂing for over 15 years, I had surgery In OctoÂber 2017. The pain still perÂsists now on a weekÂly basis but the gynaeÂcolÂoÂgist are monÂiÂtorÂing the growth of the endo. UnforÂtuÂnateÂly there is no cure, so I cope by using painkillers when in chronÂic pain, espeÂcialÂly when I have to work.
I nevÂer heard of this conÂdiÂtion until I was diagÂnosed but comÂmendÂably now, I see more and more brave women come forÂward to tell their stoÂry. In the long run, it will defÂiÂniteÂly help raise awareÂness to health offiÂcials globÂalÂly to find a cure and diagÂnose women soonÂer.

How are you spendÂing this time of quarÂanÂtine? Are there any pasÂsions or hobÂbies that you’re explorÂing at this time for which you wouldn’t have time for before?
I’ve always wantÂed to improve my fitÂness but I must admit, I enjoy workÂing out through social sports like netÂball and classÂes than going to the gym. I need a gym budÂdy or a PT to motiÂvate me to go everyÂday! But surÂprisÂingÂly, I have enjoyed doing insanÂiÂty beach body workÂouts. Intense interÂval cirÂcuit trainÂing durÂing this time has been a great stress relievÂer. It’s also been fun disÂcovÂerÂing online classÂes with my friends and famÂiÂly. Great how we are using this time to motiÂvate each othÂer to keep busy and fit! I’m also teachÂing myself to cook one new recipe each week! I do love to cook as my mum is a caterÂer but I rarely had time to so it’s been fun brushÂing up on those skills.
Tell us about your style, also do you have health and beauÂty rouÂtine? Any parÂticÂuÂlar prodÂucts that you swear by?
I love strucÂture, texÂtures & simÂple styles with the use of bold colours! EspeÂcialÂly since EngÂland conÂsists of grey skies 90% of the time, colour is a great way to help me start my day upbeat and posÂiÂtiveÂly! Health wise I have cut out gluten and diary which helps lessen the inflamÂmaÂtion in my stomÂach due to my conÂdiÂtion. I do have senÂsiÂtive skin so I have to be careÂful with what I use. I keep my rouÂtine quite simÂple. I use DerÂmaÂlogÂiÂca to wash my face, rose water as a tonÂer, then shea butÂter & olive oil to moisÂturise, espeÂcialÂly at night. Murad are a great brand to help plump your skin and feel fresh, espeÂcialÂly for those 5am call times. As for makeÂup, Mac or Nars conÂcealÂer to comÂbat my dark cirÂcles is a must! FenÂty beauÂty, YSL, Nars and BobÂbi Brown have a great range of founÂdaÂtion shades for women of colour. I nevÂer go on set withÂout these two products.

What’s next for you, are there any projects that you’re involved in that we can look forÂward to seeÂing you in the future?
I’m prayÂing Ryan Coogler is writÂing a role for me in Black PanÂther 2 as we speak, but until then, I am excitÂed for you all to see the BulÂletÂproof speÂcial. Will be released hopeÂfulÂly this SumÂmer which we filmed in Cape Town for over 8 weeks! Such a beauÂtiÂful city. The stoÂry line for this 3 part speÂcial is insane! You wouldn’t want to miss this!
